"etymology_text": "From Proto-Indo-European *monéyeti, verb based on Proto-Indo-European *mon-éye-, causative formed from the root *men- (“to think”) with the suffix *-éye-. It is not clear why the term lacks the shift of *mo- > ma- in open syllables. Schrijver suggests the the o-vocalism was formed on the model of other causatives. Examples such as mola (“millstone”) (from *molh₂éh₂) suggest that this sound law must have happened very early in the prehistory of Latin, before the loss of the consonantal laryngeals. Therefore, a potential shift of *monéyeti > *manejō > *monejō probably also occurred early in Italic prehistory, possibly at a time when causative formations were still productive. Compare Sanskrit मानयति (mānáyati), Proto-Balto-Slavic *minḗˀtei (whence Proto-Baltic *mánīˀtei).",
